We need a function that can transform a string into a number. What ways of achieving this do you know?
Note: Don’t worry, all inputs will be strings, and every string is a perfectly valid representation of an integral number.

The solution in Java
Option 1 (using parseInt
):
public class StringToNumber { public static int stringToNumber(String str) { return Integer.parseInt(str); } }
Option 2 (using valueOf
):
public class StringToNumber { public static int stringToNumber(String str) { return Integer.valueOf(str); } }
It may be good practice to go a step further and sanity check the output:
public class StringToNumber { public static int stringToNumber(String str) { try { return Integer.parseInt(str); } catch (NumberFormatException NFE) { throw NFE; } } }
